The Band enjoyed a very exciting weekend of rehearsals with David Hirst, the former Resident Conductor of Brighouse and Rastrick Band, and were extremely privileged to have an opportunity to work with such a high- calibre and experienced musician. Thank you for your time, David and we hope to see you again in the future!
Musical Director, Derek Johnston, is now putting the finishing touches to the Band's testpiece for the SWBBA Contest, at Torquay, on Saturday. Derek is proud to be able to take the Band to his first contest as MD and this will see the culmination of weeks of hard work by everyone involved, as well as some fairly significant changes to the Band line- up.
Andy Wingham, at just 14 years old, is doing an excellent job as Principal Cornet and is ably assisted by old hand Ian Harvey and father and daughter team, Clive and Lowenna Christophers. As a talented pianist, Andy's Dad, David, was rather reluctantly coaxed into the percussion section (along with fellow percussion "imposters," regular brass players Jack Curnow and Matt Wingham), but may have now found his true vocation!
For another father and daughter combination, Steve (Eb Bass) and Hannah Matthews (2nd Cornet), Saturday will be their debut contest appearance with the Band. Similarly, Katy Wilson (2nd Horn), Shaun Carter (2nd Euphonium) and Lowenna Christophers also make their debut outings with Helston, whereas Gavin Pascoe (3rd Cornet) and Ben Martin (Percussion) have both returned in recent months and are delighted to be back in blue jackets and new- look black bow ties. New band member Hannah plays next to Russell Harvey, who, in complete contrast, is approaching 70 years with Helston.
Recent visitors to this website may have noticed that the Player Profile section has been out of action. However, it will shortly return, with write-ups and pictures to allow visitors to identify newer members and allow familiarise themselves with some older (and perhaps not so beautiful?) faces, such as Russell's, too!
Next weekend will be another busy one for the Band, with Helston's Remembrance Parade on the afternoon of 10 November and a concert with St Keverne Male Choir, at Helston Church, in the evening.
The following weekend sees the Helston Town Band 55th Solo and Quartet Contest take place at Helston School and Contest Secretary, Lionel Endean, would gratefully receive entries (currently fairly low!) from players of all standards. Lionel can be contacted on 01209 212458 and hopes to hear from you.
Back to this weekend... fingers crossed for a good performance at Torquay and a well- deserved result for the Band. We wonder if success could lead to prolonged celebrations for Paul Jenkin (1st Baritone and 50 years young this week) and Lowenna Christophers, whose birthday is on Friday...
