TICKETS LAUNCHED FOR HELSTON TOWN BAND’S 2015 LISMORE PROMS - SATURDAY 29 AUGUST
Members of Helston Town Band are very proud to launch tickets for their Annual Lismore Proms. Tickets will be on sale from tomorrow evening (Friday 10 July), when the band will play outside The Harbour Inn, Porthleven, from 7.30pm.
The Lismore Proms has grown from a fairly modest affair (originally the concept of former Musical Director John Hitchens), with a tiny stage and limited audience, into a large concert for 500 or more people, with an impressive, dressed stage, sound system and extensive lighting. It has now become a regular event for many and a fixed highlight of the band’s calendar.
The event is once again to be held in the extremely beautiful gardens of the Grade II Listed Lismore House, by kind permission of the owner, Band President, Michael Jay. It is a wonderful setting that would be hard to replicate elsewhere; a natural amphitheatre, set in lovely grounds and in a private garden in the centre of Helston.
This year’s event is significant in that Professional Conductor, David Johnson, a serving Marine at Portsmouth, will oversee the proceedings for the first time…. and in his own inimitable style! In recent months, Kevin Johns, as Deputy Musical Director, has regularly led rehearsals, with David making regular trips down to Helston, to work alongside him and take the band at contests. The Band is indebted to both gentlemen for their considerable work.
At Lismore, the music will be varied, as usual; with David at the helm, there are bound to be one or two surprises along the way, in contrast to the traditional Jerusalem, the rousing Land of Hope and Glory and the ever- popular Trelawny finale.
The gates will open at 6pm, when The Helston Concert Brass, with their Musical Director, Ian Edwards, will be on hand to entertain the audience, prior to the official start, at 7pm.
This year sees the return of wonderful local Mother and Daughter soloists, Mezzo Soprano, Karen Hurn and her daughter, Bromley, Soprano. The band is delighted to welcome both ladies back to the stage.
Karen and Bromley will also be the special guests at the band’s Songs of Praise, being held at Lismore, the following day, at 6.30pm. The evening will be led by Reverend Danny Reed and proceeds will go to Tanya’s Courage Trust.
Keeping the Proms running smoothly will be Bruce Taylor, with whom the band is delighted to work with once again. Bruce has built up quite a reputation locally as a very entertaining compere and will move things along in his own humorous style.
Guests to Lismore are encouraged to bring their own picnics, rugs (although there will be limited seating available) and wine! Union Jack and Cornish flags will be on sale for the big proms finale, when the audience will be encouraged to participate!
From next week, tickets, at £10 each, will be on sale from Christophers Estate Agents, (Wendron Street, Helston), Heathercraft Fabrics (Coinagehall Street, Helston) and Pictures & Things Gallery (Meneage Street, Helston).
The band is grateful to local businesses for assisting with ticket sales.
Tickets will also be available on the gate, on the day itself.

The band is busy over the coming weeks and will be playing at Constantine Band Sunday, on 19 July, at the Helston Town Band Fete (at the Boating Lake) on 25 July, from 2pm and back at Porthleven, on 31 August, from 7.30pm. Anyone interested in attending the Lismore Proms can purchase their tickets at these events and the band look forward to meeting members of the public. For a small donation, the band extends an invitation to supporters to officially become a Vice President.
For the members of Helston Town Band, it is fingers crossed now for a successful summer season and enjoyable build up to the highlight, on 29 August, at Lismore!
