Kevin Johns, MD, led Helston Town Band through a diverse and interesting repertoire during the band's set at the Festival of Cornish Brass in Newquay on Saturday 3rd February. The performance opened with a bold yet lyrical march - Simoraine by Clive Barraclough, followed by a theme from the James Bond movie "Live and Let Die" which featured soloist, Soprano Cornet - Sean Sjoholm. The musical dynamics moved then to a well-known melody adopted by Morecambe and Wise in 1969 as their signature tune - "Bring Me Sunshine".
A smooth rendition of "Guardian of My Soul" followed (this arrangement combines the composer's own song 'I worship you', with the well-known hymn 'O Jesus, I have promised' - both contain the phrase 'Guardian of my soul' within the lyrics).
The final piece for Helston was "The Floral Dance", immediately followed by their own anthem - "The Furry/Floral Dance", heard every year amongst the streets of Helston on May 8th.
The band thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the Festival and are now busy rehearsing for the areas at Torquay in March.
